Paul McCartney (born June 18, 1942) is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. He gained worldwide fame as the bass guitarist and singer for the rock band the Beatles, widely considered the most popular and influential group in the history of pop music. His songwriting partnership with John Lennon was the most successful of the post-war era. After the group disbanded in 1970, he pursued a solo career and formed the band Wings with his first wife, Linda, and Denny Laine.
McCartney is one of the most successful composers and performers of all time. More than 2,200 artists have covered his Beatles song “Yesterday”, making it one of the most covered songs in popular music history. Wings’ 1977 release “Mull of Kintyre” is one of the all-time best-selling singles in the UK. A two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of the Beatles in 1988, and as a solo artist in 1999), and an 18-time Grammy Award winner, McCartney has written, or co-written, 32 songs that have reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. McCartney, Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr all received appointment as Members of the Order of the British Empire in 1965 and, in 1997, McCartney was knighted for services to music.
McCartney has released an extensive catalogue of songs as a solo artist and has composed classical and electronic music. He has taken part in projects to promote international charities related to such subjects as animal rights, seal hunting, land mines, vegetarianism, poverty, and music education. He has married three times and is the father of five children.

Linda McCartney
Linda McCartney (née Eastman; September 24, 1941 – April 17, 1998) was an American musician, photographer, and animal rights activist. She was married to Paul McCartney of the Beatles. McCartney was a professional photographer of celebrities and contemporary musicians. Her photos were also published in the book Linda McCartney’s Sixties: Portrait of an Era in 1992.
Following their 1969 marriage and the 1970 breakup of the Beatles, Paul taught Linda to play keyboards and they recorded Ram (1971) as a duo. That same year they formed the band Wings. She continued to be part of her husband’s touring band following Wings’ breakup in 1981 up until The New World Tour in 1993.
McCartney was an animal rights activist and wrote and published several vegetarian cookbooks. She also founded the Linda McCartney Foods company with her husband.
In 1995 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and died from the disease in 1998 at the age of 56.
Wide Prairie (1998)
Wide Prairie is a posthumous compilation by Linda McCartney, released October 26, 1998. The album is composed of songs recorded between 1972 and 1998, some of which were previously released while others are unreleased Wings era recordings. The idea for the album was inspired by a fan who wrote in inquiring about “Seaside Woman”, a reggae song which Wings had recorded in 1972 under the name Suzy and the Red Stripes featuring Linda on lead vocals. Lead guitar on the song “The Light Comes from Within” is played by the McCartneys’ son, musician/sculptor James McCartney. The album reached number 127 in the UK charts, while the title track made the top 75, at number 74. “The Light Comes from Within” also charted, at number 56 in the UK charts.
